I have no idea how this dog found himself in a situation like this, but it nearly costed him his life. He was spotted by the crew of this ship near almost 100 miles away from the nearest port of Magadan, Russia. Precariously sitting on a tiny ice slab it was a matter of time before he froze or starved to death and there was no easy way of saving him.
The best thing the captain could do is change the course and try to come as close to the frightened pooch as possible. Getting too close meant that the wake from the ship could tip the ice slab over. The rest of the rescue plan was in the hands of brave (if not a little bit crazy) Russian sailors.
